Self-Portrait in a Straw Hat — Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun | 18th-Century French Court Painter Masterpiece | Hand-Painted Oil Reproduction | Framed
— The queen's painter, brush in hand, smiling back at history.
A straw hat adorned with feathers and flowers. A blush-pink dress with a white lace collar. A palette held in one hand, brushes in the other. And a smile — open, confident, radiantly alive.
Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun was the official portrait painter to Marie Antoinette, the most celebrated female artist of 18th-century France, and one of the most sought-after painters in all of Europe. When the French Revolution forced her into exile in 1789, the courts of Russia, Austria, and England competed for her services. Over her lifetime, she produced more than 660 portraits and 200 landscapes — an astonishing body of work by any measure, and extraordinary for a woman of her era.
This Self-Portrait in a Straw Hat (1782) was inspired by Rubens' famous portrait known as Le Chapeau de Paille — and it was Vigée Le Brun's way of announcing herself as the heir to a great tradition. The complex interplay of sunlight and shadow across the hat and face remains one of the most technically dazzling passages in 18th-century portraiture.
Now held at the National Gallery in London, it is one of her most iconic images — and one of the most joyful self-portraits ever painted.
This is a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas — every brushstroke applied by a skilled fine-art painter. The texture of real paint. The presence of real art.
