Ivan Aivazovsky, the great master of Russian Romantic marine painting, produced over 6,000 works in his lifetime — nearly all of them devoted to the mystery of light on water. Beloved by the Ottoman Sultan himself, Aivazovsky visited Istanbul many times, drawn irresistibly to the Bosphorus and its mythical beauty.
