A flagpole slashes through the composition. To the right, a white-clad jockey steadies a dark horse straining with barely contained energy. To the left, in the haze, another rider has already broken away. Degas does not paint the race. He paints the instant before it — the held breath, the coiled tension, the world on the edge of motion.

Completed around 1878–79, Jockeys before the Race is one of Degas' most radical works. Inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, he shifted the composition's main subjects to one side, bisected the picture with a starting-post, and cropped figures at the frame — as if a camera had caught the scene by accident. When it was shown at the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition in Paris, it shocked audiences. Today, it reads as startlingly modern — a prototype of the photographic eye that would define the 20th century.
