— From behind the fan, a gaze that holds the whole room.

Amid the glamour of a Parisian ball, a young woman in a white evening gown pauses — apart from the noise, apart from the crowd. Dark hair adorned with flowers. A 18th-century fan painted with a Watteau-style courtship scene, held lightly in white-gloved hands. And eyes that look directly, quietly, at you.

Berthe Morisot painted this in 1875, the year she was preparing for the second Impressionist Exhibition. A founding member of the movement and the most celebrated female painter of the 19th century, Morisot did something here that no male Impressionist would have thought to do: she stepped away from the spectacle and painted a woman's interior life — her observation, her composure, her silent power.

The fan itself was Morisot's own — and the 18th-century Watteau scene it bears was no accident. Critics recognized the connection immediately. One wrote of her work: not since Fragonard in the 18th century had such pale colors been applied with such boldness of spirit.

This is a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas — every brushstroke applied by a skilled fine-art painter. The texture of real paint. The presence of real art.
